I was drawn in by the look on DeNiro's face, with gun in hand. Perusing the cover of the DVD, I thought, this movie should be interesting. Boy, was I ever right!
I love action films. I like DeNiro in almost any film. So what can I say? This is one of the best of the two combined. This movie is rather like Reservoir Dogs set in Europe.
It is a jigsaw puzzle of characters with ulterior motives. Expert marksmen, munitions suppliers, and drivers gather together in a warehouse to carry out orders delivered by a woman who reports to an unnamed, mysterious boss.
Their orders are to retrieve a suitcase (contents unknown) before it is delivered to its destination.
This is an action film with a capital "A", and not one scene is gratuitous. It is a well-oiled machine: the elaborate set-ups and car chases are so much fun to watch!
Favorite scene: Robert DeNiro with Jean Reno pursuing Natascha McElhone in a car chase through Paris, France (miraculously with no traffic jams). The way she maneuvers that manual drive BMW is mesmerizing.
Ronin describes a Samurai without a master.
